What Medications Can Treat My PTSD, OCD and Dissociation?
10/1/2010 9:34:35 PM
Dear Dr. Archer,
I have been prescribed Zoloft  to treat PTSD and OCD. Because I have severe Dissociation as well, my work in my therapy is disrupted. I am hoping that the Zoloft will help with that. So far, however, it has made me even more anxious. Also, I take Ativan to help me tolerate the Zoloft.

Could you tell me of any other drug treatments that are effective to reduce dissociative episodes? Thanks!
Carol

Dear Carol,
With the three diagnoses you have named, your case sounds very complex . Each of these disorders has multiple drugs which can alleviate or lessen symptoms. I really can’t advise which meds may work over the internet without doing a full evaluation of you.

However, I will say that  patience and trial and error is the key when figuring out which med or combo will work best. It is most important to work with your psychiatrist and let him know your concerns and your reactions to the drugs you are taking. Think of this as a partnership.

Also Carol, if you feel like you are on the wrong path, there is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion from another psychiatrist in terms of diagnosis and meds. It is important that whoever your doctor is, you trust him and that the two of you work together closely to determine which medications work best for you.
